The BRICS summit in Kazan, which began on October 22, is the largest-scale international event hosted by Russia since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is attending, and, according to BBC Russia, the event is a chance for Russia to prove they are not pariahs on the world stage. Leaders from China, India, Iran, Turkey, South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia are also in attendance.

As BBC Russia correspondent Grigory Atanesyan writes, "The willingness of these countries' leaders to travel to Russia and shake Putin's hand shows that Moscow's illegal invasion of Ukraine is seen by most in the Global South as yet another regional conflict, rather than an existential threat to the world order as seen in Washington and European capitals."

Earlier this year, Kazan also hosted BRICS's answer to the Olympics, where, unsurprisingly, the Russian athletes banned from this Paris games found great success.

It is a spectactular verbal pastiche: conversation, from gutter gibberish to the drawing room; oratory, from illiterates to aristocrats; prose, from boilerplate to Tolstoy; poetry, from earthy humor to Pushkin.
