Russian Doctors: Let Sasha Go

Russian Doctors: Let Sasha Go

Doctors from across Russia signed an open letter to President Vladimir Putin demanding the release of political prisoner Sasha Skochilenko.

The anti-war artist was convicted last week of spreading "fake" information about the army, because she changed five supermarket price tags for slips of paper showing numbers and statistics on the casualties of Russia's War on Ukraine. She received a seven-year prison term.

Skochilenko, who has celiac disease (an allergy to wheat), a congenital heart condition, and ciclothymia, has spent the last year and a half in a penal colony. Her lawyer, Yana Nepovinnova, said, "Alexandra [Skochilenko] won't survive in the colony."

In their statement, the doctors wrote: "In addition to our indignation at the obvious injustice of the verdict, we, the medical community, are seriously concerned about Sasha's health condition." The doctors emphasized that Skochilenko needed proper medical supervision and that being in a colony could worsen her condition. They concluded their letter demanding the immediate release of Skochilenko.

As of the writing of this article, 185 doctors have signed the petition
