Reliving the Glory Days

Reliving the Glory Days
Historically accurate. The Russian Life files.

On March, 8, more than 200 historical reenactors in World War II gear, along with 15 tanks, artillery pieces, and other vehicles, skirmished across a field outside the town of Stupino in the twentieth annual "Fiery Arc" festival.

Video footage of the festival shows machine guns, self-propelled artillery, and rumbling half-tracks surrounded by people in Soviet and German uniforms. Behind them all stood a crowd of people, including families. Other video showed toddlers climbing atop a vintage StuG III and couples ogling a 1940s machine gun.

The event was organized by a collective of Russian reenactor groups, as well as local United Russia party officials. Igor Guzhevsky, a member of the organizing committee, reported that he'd seen youngsters inspired to join the armed forces after watching the mock battle, and stressed the importance of memorializing the Second World War (or, in Russian, the Great Patriotic War).

The timing of the event is noteworthy. May 9 is Victory Day, traditionally celebrated with a massive patriotic parade through central Moscow. While typically the event brings together historic tanks, modern armor, and the latest in Russian military tech, this year promises to be more subdued, due, reportedly, to the threat of drone attacks. Similar, perhaps, to the 2024 event, which was marred by an unseasonable snowstorm.

While Russia has always venerated stories of the Second World War as a key historical moment, in recent years celebration has become even more prominent, with events ranging from reenactments to quizzes and everything in between.

This is, of course, in the context of the ongoing War on Ukraine, where victory has been stubbornly elusive. Better instead to celebrate a clean-cut defense and simple victory.

Stargorod: A Novel in Many Voices

Stargorod is a mid-sized provincial city that exists only in Russian metaphorical space. It has its roots in Gogol, and Ilf and Petrov, and is a place far from Moscow, but close to Russian hearts. It is a place of mystery and normality, of provincial innocence and Black Earth wisdom. Strange, inexplicable things happen in Stargorod. So do good things. And bad things. A lot like life everywhere, one might say. Only with a heavy dose of vodka, longing and mystery.
