With the rise in popularity of meatless meat, many fast food companies are expanding their offerings to include some sort of meatless option. KFC is the most recent to take on this option; they have partnered with a Russian company, 3D Bioprinting Solutions, to “print” chicken meat using chicken cells and plant material.

Yusef Khesuani, the co-founder of 3D Bioprinting Solutions, stated that “3D bioprinting technologies, initially widely recognized in medicine, are nowadays gaining popularity in producing foods such as meat… In the future, the rapid development of such technologies will allow us to make 3D-printed meat products more accessible, and we are hoping that the technology created as a result of our cooperation with KFC will help accelerate the launch of cell-based meat products on the market.”

The move is part of KFC’s goal to create the “restaurant of the future.” KFC will provide the printing company with breading and spices to ensure “the signature KFC taste.” The bioprinting process will use animal products, so the nuggets won’t be vegetarian. The new nuggets will be available for final testing in Moscow this fall.
