Over 275,000 Russian Soldiers Dead

Over 275,000 Russian Soldiers Dead

Mediazona, working with the BBC’s Russian service and a team of volunteers, has been compiling and maintaining a named list of the Russian military dead since 2022. The list is built from publicly available, verifiable sources, such as social media posts by relatives, reports in local media, and statements from regional authorities.

Their list is not exhaustive, as not every death is publicly reported. So, to build a more complete picture of the war’s true toll, the also developed an estimate based on excess male mortality, using data from the national Probate Registry. This statistical method, created in collaboration with Meduza, helps to account for the limitations of relying solely on publicly reported deaths.

You can read the entire report here, with details on methodology and things like specifics on numbers of generals killed deaths by region, and much more. It gives, in all, a very sobering and heart-wrenching report on this most horrific Russian action in the modern era.

A quarter million lives ended early and brutally, hundreds of thousands of families gutted, countless communities eviscerated, and a country that will never be the same.
