Let Sleeping Cops Lie

Let Sleeping Cops Lie
A Russian police car. The Russian Life files.

A 26-year-old Stavropol man managed a daring escape from jail with less-than-inventive means: he simply walked out when the officer on duty took a catnap.

The citizen had been arrested for disorderly conduct on the evening of August 15. He was found drunkenly yelling and cursing in an apartment courtyard. Police picked him up, booked him, and found that he had outstanding warrants for theft and other petty crimes. The officials chose to keep him locked up and finish processing him in the morning.

However, once the officer outside the man's cell fell asleep, he reached his hands through the bars and opened the bolt. He then walked out, telling other guards at a security checkpoint that he'd been released and was free to go.

The next morning, the police realized their mistake. Fortunately, the small-time fugitive was soon found at a friend's house and was re-detained.

It is a spectactular verbal pastiche: conversation, from gutter gibberish to the drawing room; oratory, from illiterates to aristocrats; prose, from boilerplate to Tolstoy; poetry, from earthy humor to Pushkin.

White Magic

The thirteen tales in this volume – all written by Russian émigrés, writers who fled their native country in the early twentieth century – contain a fair dose of magic and mysticism, of terror and the supernatural. There are Petersburg revenants, grief-stricken avengers, Lithuanian vampires, flying skeletons, murders and duels, and even a ghostly Edgar Allen Poe.
