On July 5, 2022, a statement proposing stricter sports sanctions on Belarus and Russia was signed by 35 countries.

The proposed sanctions are a response to Russia’s “unjustifiable war of choice against Ukraine.”  The document calls for a suspension of Belarus and Russia from participation in international sports federations. It also urges the removal of government officials from organizing committees, and bars them from any place of influence in international sports. While athletes from Belarus and Russia would still be allowed to participate, any emblem or symbol showing allegiance to either of the two countries would be prohibited.

The statement closes by urging those involved in the athletic community to stand in solitary with Ukraine. The full document can be seen here.

Moscow and Muscovites

Vladimir Gilyarovsky's classic portrait of the Russian capital is one of Russians’ most beloved books. Yet it has never before been translated into English. Until now! It is a spectactular verbal pastiche: conversation, from gutter gibberish to the drawing room; oratory, from illiterates to aristocrats; prose, from boilerplate to Tolstoy; poetry, from earthy humor to Pushkin.
