Reading is Essential

Reading is Essential
Books may not help stop the spread of the virus, but they do provide some support.  Photo by Jessica Ruscello via Unsplash

Reiterating a fact that our book-obsessed souls knew to be true all along, the St. Petersburg city authorities have added books to the list of essential items for lockdown; indeed, books are essential not only for learning but for your emotional well-being too.

The purpose of the list is to help decide which shops may remain open during the city-wide shutdown set to take place as a precautionary measure to stop the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic. Shops whose merchandise is 30% food or items from this list of essential non-food items may continue to operate.

Other items from the list are some basics, such as glasses, car parts, and office supplies. One surprising (and very Russian) addition to the list of essentials is flowers. Romance never takes a day off in Russia.

Stargorod: A Novel in Many Voices

Stargorod is a mid-sized provincial city that exists only in Russian metaphorical space. It has its roots in Gogol, and Ilf and Petrov, and is a place far from Moscow, but close to Russian hearts. It is a place of mystery and normality, of provincial innocence and Black Earth wisdom. Strange, inexplicable things happen in Stargorod. So do good things. And bad things. A lot like life everywhere, one might say. Only with a heavy dose of vodka, longing and mystery.

White Magic

The thirteen tales in this volume – all written by Russian émigrés, writers who fled their native country in the early twentieth century – contain a fair dose of magic and mysticism, of terror and the supernatural. There are Petersburg revenants, grief-stricken avengers, Lithuanian vampires, flying skeletons, murders and duels, and even a ghostly Edgar Allen Poe.
