Gorbachev Dead at 91

Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, the Communist Party Leader who unleashed democracy, glasnost, and perestroika, has died.

The changes his term as General Secretary and then president wrought on Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union are widely known – largely respected in the West, he was viewed rather more skeptically in Russia.

This article appeared in our March/April 2021 issue, on the occasion of Gorbachev's 90th birthday. It aptly summarizes the mixed emotions Russians have toward this historic leader.
