Since Western electronic companies exited the Russian market in protest against the invasion of Ukraine, several Chinese companies have become leading suppliers of smartphones to Russian consumers.

Some of the leading brands to walk into the spotlight include Xiaomi, Infinix, Tecno, and Realme. Realme’s January to June sales doubled in 2022  versus 2021, to one million units. In recent months Tecno and other smartphone companies have seen up to a twentyfold increase in sales.

On the other hand, sales by Western companies such as Samsung and Apple are falling rapidly. Samsung now only accounts for 15 percent of Russian smartphone sales, and Apple a mere 14 percent.

Alexander Surkov from Russia’s GS Group predicts that Chinese electronic and smartphone companies could eventually hold 90 percent of the Russian market.

Stargorod is a mid-sized provincial city that exists only in Russian metaphorical space. It has its roots in Gogol, and Ilf and Petrov, and is a place far from Moscow, but close to Russian hearts. It is a place of mystery and normality, of provincial innocence and Black Earth wisdom. Strange, inexplicable things happen in Stargorod. So do good things. And bad things. A lot like life everywhere, one might say. Only with a heavy dose of vodka, longing and mystery.
