A series of border clashes between Soviet-Mongolian and Japanese forces near the Khalkhin Gol river during May-September 1939, that ended in Japan’s defeat. The Japanese claimed the river as the border between Japanese occupied Manchuria and the People’s Republic of Mongolia, which disputed that claim.
