Lydia Chukovskaya (1907-1996) was the daughter of Korney Chukovsky and an accomplished author in her on right, most notably for her novel Sofia Petrovna, a harrowing tale of life during the purges. She wrote very personal chronicles of the horrors of Soviet totalitarianism, to which she and her family had fallen victim in the 1930s, was a close friend and chronicler of Anna Akhmatova, and publicly defended persecuted dissidents like Aleksander Solzhenitsyn and Andrei Sakharov.
