Sanctioning Iran

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky submitted a proposal to the country's legislature, the Verkhovna Rada, that would sanction Iran for 50 years for supplying Russia with Shahed drones. After initially denying that it was assisting Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, Iran has admitted the devices after their remains were found scattered across Ukrainian soil.

The draft sent to the Rada proposes a complete ban on trade with Iran, stopping the transit of resources, prohibiting travel, and preventing the withdrawal of capital by Iranian residents. This package of sanctions also includes a prohibition of technological trade, restrictions on the transfer of intellectual property rights, and a halt to investment in and from Iran. It is not the first time Ukraine has imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic; the Rada reviewed similar measures in April.

Even though Ukraine has improved its defenses against drone strikes, thanks to Western military aid, the debris caused by the interception of these munitions can still harm both infrastructure and civilians. On May 28, the same day Zelensky submitted his sanctions proposal, The Kyiv Independent reported that a civilian was killed and two were injured after the debris of a downed drone fell on a gas station.

The Ukrainian Parliament has not scheduled a date for its vote on the proposal.
