One month before the Olympic Games are set to begin in Paris, another international athletic event is taking place in the Paris of Russia: Kazan, capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. The BRICs Games began June 12 and will end on June 23, capped with an international tourism forum from June 22 to 23.

Competitors will come in delegations from BRICs countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. The games provide a convenient opportunity for Russian athletes to compete under their country's flag, as Russia is banned from the Paris Olympics.

The BRICs Games and the forum to follow are intended to strengthen relations between the BRICs countries. According to Deputy Mayor of Moscow Natalya Sergunina, "Today, travelers from the BRICs countries account for more than half of the incoming tourist flow to Moscow from foreign countries."

Meanwhile, several Russians will compete under a neutral status at the Paris games, without the Russian flag or national anthem.

Moscow and Muscovites

Vladimir Gilyarovsky's classic portrait of the Russian capital is one of Russians’ most beloved books. Yet it has never before been translated into English. Until now! It is a spectactular verbal pastiche: conversation, from gutter gibberish to the drawing room; oratory, from illiterates to aristocrats; prose, from boilerplate to Tolstoy; poetry, from earthy humor to Pushkin.
