Notable events on this day in Russian history

1960: U.S. U.N. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge accused the Soviets of hiding a microphone inside a wood carving of the Great Seal of the United States that had been presented by Soviet schoolchildren to the US Ambassador in Moscow in 1946. The bug was discovered in September 1952, when George Kennan was ambassador.

1947: Death penalty replaced with a 25-year prison term, in consideration of peacetime.

1799: Alexander Pushkin, writer, born (died 1837) – date is O.S., in modern era he is feted on June 6.
