Пусть всегда будет солнце!

One of the most effective ways to acquire new vocabulary is to learn words and phrases that share a root (корень). Однокоренные слова (common root words) will not always have exactly the same spelling. In the word sun (солнце) the root has an alternating consonant, so “ц” changes to “ч” when we derive an adjective sunny/solar (солнечный). Some collocations are formed exactly the same in both languages: солнечный день. Some are not as easy, for example солнечный зайчик. Can you figure it out? Read through the list below,  look up the unfamiliar words and phrases. Make a set of regular or online flashcards (e.g. on quizlet.com) and study them. Think of how you would use them in a sentence.

Try to use the words and phrases from above to create “silly” sentences. it will help you learn new words faster.

Try to spot as many “sun-related” words as you can in the coming weeks when you read in Russian, watch films, listen to songs (“О соле мио!/Моё солнце!” Э. ди Капуа), read poetry (“Зимнее утро”, A.C. Пушкин),  or speak with someone in Russian.
