To perceive the beauty of folk art means to understand the people's soul and history not by the mind alone, but also by the heart." (Gennadi Blinov, collector of Russian folk toys). Traditional hand-made and hand-painted wooden toys and miniature folk sculptures are an important window into the rich tapestry of Russian culture and history.
The pieces reflect a unique craftsmanship, bright colors and traditional decorative elements such as floral and berry designs that are unique to each Russian village and represent aesthetic concepts perfected and passed down from generation to generation. Russian folk-art enthusiasts love the way these pieces preserve aspects of daily life from the past even in the face of progressing modern civilization. To stimulate creativity and imagination we will examine a beautiful collection of traditional Russian toy arts and crafts. Then, in the hands-on part of the program, students will paint an authentic Russian wooden toy or a piece of applied art.
