a quarterly themed journal of quality reading from Russia

Chtenia is the Russian word for “readings.” And it is the title of our quarterly literary journal of quality fiction, non-fiction and photography, published in a convenient and portable paperback book format. Edited by Tamara Edelman, Chtenia is the only regularly published journal of Russian fiction in English translation. And yet the fiction is only part of it!
Now, for a limited time, new subscribers to Chtenia will receive an extra issue of Chtenia — a $10 value — FREE for every year they subscribe. Sign on for one year, get five issues for the price of four... subscribe for two years, get 10 issues for the price of 8. That's 20% more Chtenia free, just for subscribing online!
Themed issues: Each issue of Chtenia has a theme, and its 128+ pages of readings touch on that theme, using it as a looking glass into aspects of Russian culture, history and life.

Fiction: Featuring the quality translations of past and present Russian literature you have come to expect from the publishers of Russian Life. Chtenia illuminates little-known works by famous Russian writers and inaugurates the English language careers of others.

Non-fiction: Unillustrated works of non-fiction, including memoirs, humor, travel essays and more.

Miscellany: Poetry by Russian authors, past and present; black and white photography; illustrations; trenchant observations and other odds and ends to break up our longer pieces.

Back issues sell for $10, but you can subscribe for a year for just $35 — a savings of almost 30%! [Click over here to see a listing of back issues and their contents.]
"The journal is handsomely but simply produced, privileging the text over fancy graphics, but easy to read and designed for study and enjoyment, which makes it both an excellent classroom resource, as well as fine reading for anyone who appreciates good literary journals. Contributors’ notes provide ample, but not excessive, historical context, and include, as they should, information about the translators. This is an impressive and unusual journal that deserves a space in every university and secondary school’s library collection and in the mailboxes of serious readers, no matter their Russian language skills." — NewPages

5 Stars My entre into classic and contemporary Russian literature
by Michael McLeod from NE Ohio, USA on Jan 11, 2010
I have noted with pleasure that every issue introduces me to books and authors which I might not have been otherwise exposed to. The editing and content are consistently superior, and it is just the right size for someone who travels, as I do. The quantity and variety of content is such that one's appetite is whetted for many a fine story. Some of the excerpts are from works which are not available in English; sadly, this can sometimes be a double-edged sword: fortunately, you've found the only place you're likely to find ANY of the work in English; unfortunately, this excerpt is all you get. While not always a clear look into Russian society, per se, it always provides an insight to the Russian soul.

5 Stars Brilliant!
by Tristyn Bloom from New Haven, CT on Jan 19, 2009
Brilliant way for anyone with an interest to self-educate and get exposure to lesser-known authors and works. I'm currently an undergrad Russian Studies major, and the readings I've done in Chtenia have given me plenty of fodder for papers and class discussions. A lot of truly great Russian authors never managed to cross over into the American literary consciousness like Dostoevsky and Tolstoy have; I'm genuinely thankful there's a publication like Chtenia working to correct that. Having the poetry in both Russian and English is also supremely, supremely helpful and edifying. Thank you so much!
