1936: Maxim Gorky, writer, died

1957: "Anti-Party" group - a majority in the ruling presidium - votes to oust Khrushchev and replace him with Nikolai Bulganin; Khrushchev, with Marshal Zhukov's backing, argues that only the Central Committee can vote him out, and he holds onto power after an extraordinary CC vote on the 22nd.

1973: Leonid Brezhnev visits the United States

1979: SALT II arms treaty is signed
