1843: Klement Timiryazev, agronomist, botanist, born

1856: Tretyakov gallery founded

1870: One of the first major strikes in Russia, at the Neva Paper Pressing Factory. 800 workers went on strike. Government cracks down and 62 are indicted. Investigation turned up mass worker exploitation and the judge was forced to hand out only minimal sentences.

1913: Nikita Bogoslovsky, composer, born (died 2004)

1972: President Richard Nixon met Soviet Leader Leonid Brezhnev in Moscow becoming the first U.S. president to visit Soviet Russia.
