1921: Grigory Chukhrai, film director, born (died October 2001)

1924: Eighth Party Congress convenes; votes not to make Lenin's "Testament" public. Stalin offers resignation (Testament strongly criticizes him), but is kept on as General Secretary at urging of Kamenev and Zinoviev. The Testament is not recorded in the minutes.

1951: Anatoly Karpov, world chess champion, born
