1689: Sofia Miloslavskaya, Peter the Great's half-sister, confined to Novodevichy convent

1914: In World War I, the Russians were heavily out-maneuvered by the Germans under Hindenburg and Ludendorff at the battle of Tannenberg (actually located at Allenstein, but the battle was renamed by Germans to be a symbolic counterweight to their medieval loss at Tannenberg). Over 30,000 Russians were killed.

1933: Soviet Union signed a five-year nonagression pact with fascist Italy

1935: Valentin Gaft, actor, born
