 | OSIP MANDELSTAM (1891-1938) was a leading poet and essayist of the Acmeist group. Born in Warsaw, he and his family were allowed to move to St. Petersburg at the turn of the century, where Mandelstam got his schooling. He wrote poetry and essays and did a great deal of translating. His Stalin Epigramgot him arrested in 1933, but miraculously he was only exiled to Voronezh. But in 1938 he was arrested again and sentenced to hard labor. He died en route to the camps. "Only in Russia is poetry respected," Mandelstam once wrote. "It gets people killed. Is there anywhere else where poetry is so common a motive for murder?" |
