ABM, NMD - Alphabet Soup of Defense
Do you think the Cold War was
over? Existing tensions between Russia and the U.S. regarding missile defense
and NATO expansion are increasing. Is it possible for both to protect their
interests against perceived threats without becoming a threat to each
other?(originally published Feb. 2001)

PARTING THOUGHTS
At the very least, next week's summit will be interesting. My journalists and analysts have been projected their views as to what the outcome will be. Some think there is a very real chance for a settlement of the ABM vs. NMD issue. Others see agreement regarding the details of further arms reduction. Still more think the emphasis of the summit will be on economic/trade agreements. The list goes on. Then there's the issue of concessions for Russia in return for its support of the US war in Afghanistan. Opinions on this vary, of course.
At this juncture, I prefer to watch and see what happens. As mentioned
above, I will be posting headline news from various sources as the summit
progresses. I, also, invite anyone who would like to discuss the events to
logon to our Forum and join in.

"From the very beginning, Russia was created as a supercentralized
state. That's practically laid down in its genetic code, its traditions and the
mentality of its people."
