MIKHAIL MORDASOV was born in Novgorod and educated as a lawyer. Yet, after taking up photography during his military service, he shifted his professional goals to photojournalism. Since 2009 he has lived in Sochi and worked as a freelance photographer in both the future Olympic city and the wider Caucasus region.

Turning Sochi into an Olympic city in time for the 2014 games is a Herculean task. It does not help that environmentalists, local residents and bookkeepers are all wary. And then there is Georgia, just a few kilometers away.
