ZINAIDA GIPPIUS (1869-1945) was a writer, poet and religious thinker, and one of the most influential Russian women of her age. With her husband, Dmitry Merezhkovsky, she founded the Symbolism movement. While she welcomed the February 1917 revolution, she was one of the first artists to publicly denounce the Bolshevik Revolution. She and her husband emigrated to Europe in 1919.
