JOHN GIVENS is associate professor of Russian at University of Rochester, New York, where, he teaches courses on Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and twentieth-century Russian literature and film. He is the author of Prodigal Son: Vasily Shukshin in Soviet Russian Culture (Northwestern UP, 2000), the co-translator of Vasily Shukshin, Stories from a Siberian Village (Northern Illinois UP, 1996) and editor (since 1999) of the quarterly translation journal Russian Studies in Literature. He is currently writing a book on the image of Jesus Christ in Russian literature.
