She is best known for her reporting on the Chechen Wars from 1999 until her murder (still unsolved) in October 2006. She received numerous international awards for her journalism, including the Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism, the PEN American Center Freedom to Write Award and the Olof Palme Prize.
