MALCOLM GILBERT is a retired geography professor in Carmarthen, Wales. He first visited Russia in the summer of 1961 and has returned well over fifty times, often with groups of students, British and American (including, in 1981, Russian Life editor Paul Richardson). A Russian speaker, he has long-standing friendships, including among human rights activists.
