FYODOR TYUTCHEV (1803-1973) was one of the greatest Russian romantic poets. Many Russians consider himto be third greatest in their poetic pantheon, after Pushkin and Lemontov. Born to nobility, he served in the foreign service, living abroad for over 20 years. An avowed Slavophile, he spoke better French than Russian. Even so, his personal experiences (multiple love affairs) and metaphysical worldview led him to create several masterpieces of Russian romantic poetry.
