In the 1920s, he worked as a village teacher, then an agronomist. He began to write articles and stories about village life in the 1930s. He gained fame with the publication, in 1971, of his novel White Beem of the Black Ear. This was compounded when the book was made into a film in 1977, directed by Stanislav Rostotsky and starring Vyacheslav Tikhonov.
